WAIKATO RIVER SERVICE.
ENLARGEMENT OF FLEET. The development of transport trade on the Waikato River by the R 005.3 Shipping Company is leading to considerable enlargement of the company's fleet. Following the commissioning some days ago of the big new stern-wheeler Rawhiti the assembling of a new tug specially constructed in England for the firm is to be started at Mercer in a couple of months. This vessel will "be 68ft. long, with a draught of 2ft. 6in., and is to be fitted with triple screws driven by powerful engines. The tug will be capable of towing 60 fully loaded barges, each carrying 50 tons, at a good pace against the stream. The company also hopes to build at at early date another iron barge to carry a floating crane, for use on any part of the navigable stretch of the river. The obsolete stern-wheeler Freetrader is to be dismantled and used as a cargo barge. The paddle steamer Manuwai is being overhauled and repainted in readiness for the summer excursion season on the river.
