FEDERAL POLITICS.
AMERICAN VIEW. A SIGNIFICANT GAIN. PEOPLE'S DECISION CLEAR. NEW YORK, November 17. The New York Times comments upon tlie result of the Australian election. It says the Prime Minister, Mr S. M. Bruce, lias made good his challenge to the Labour Opposition. Although the Government’s gain is slight, any gain is significant in view of the political situation. Recent elections in the Dominions go far toward justifying the contention that the British Empire needs no bond other than the sentiment of unity. The same current of opinion has within this year manifested itself in Britain and in the Dominions. The Conservatives were swept into power in England last winter. In Canada the Conservatives made remarkable gains at the recent election. In New Zealand the Conservative Government was returned to power recently, and new Australia, in her national sphere, has held fast to the Conservative doctrine in response to very much the same forces which won over so many Liberal votes to Mr Stanley Baldwin, Prime Minister of Britain. MONTREAL, November 16. The Montreal Star, in commenting on the result of the Australian election, says: “The significance of the people’s decision is clear. Australia the most advanced of the British Dominions on all questions which affect Labour, lias decided that she does not want and will not tolerate the revolutionary policies of extremists, and that Communists can have no place lit her councils nor any voice in her affairs. “ This does not mean that the best elements of the Labour Party have any reason to feel discouraged, nor does it mean that the cause of Labour is losing ground with the Australian people. It is rather a national reaction in favour of law, order, moderation and cautiousness against all forms of violence and revolution, and reveals a strong objection to antiBritish influences undermining the loyalty of the Australian people." PROBABLE FINAL RESULTS. (United Press Association.) SYDNEY, November 17.
