BRITISH UNEMPLOYMENT.
MIGRATION AS REMEDY PLEA FOR STRONGER POLICY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received 12.10 p.m. LONDON, September 13. The Daily Express in an editorial deplores the growing unemployment, and says it would be worth £500,000,000 to Britain to convert 1,500,000 unproductive British into productive Australians, New Zealanders, or Canadians.
Why, it asks, cannot this be done. All have heard phrases such as, "we fought for England and will stay here." We sympathise with the man who loves his country, but do not sympathise with the man who prefers the dole when he knows his manhood and independence lie in Australia or New Zealand. There are admittedly hardships there but they are glorious hardships. If the Government, in conjunction with the Dominions, did its part in the spirit of Englishmen, it would prove the same as of old. The untillcd fields of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and the tragic thousands of our streets, plead alike for a strong leader.
