DISCUSSING INCOMES.
PRIME DONNE AND VIRTUOSI. The discussion in the papers of late about the incomes of the leading members of the various professions has stimulated curiosity about the earnings of the most eminent prime donne and virtuosi. A few are almost certainly near the £60,000 a year mark (states an exchange). Amongst these would bo Mme. Galli-Curci, whose extraordinary vogue in the United States in the past few’ years has already brought her a fortune, M. Kreisler, M. Paderewski—when he spends the winter in an American tour —and Mr John McCormack, who must gain a princely income from his gramophone records alone. Other stars of the musical profession whose income must be above rather than below 100,000 dollars a year are M. Heifetz, Mme. Frieda llcmpel, Mme. Elena Gerhardt, and Mme. Toti dal Monte. M. Gigli and M. Chaliapine arc two other singers whom very few opera houses can afford to engage, whilst the monetary value of Mme Jeritza’s voice is shown by the fact that when in London she refused a fee of two thousand guineas to sing at an evening party.
