TROWERN'S EASY VICTORY. MCKNIGHT SHOWS STAGE FRIGHT. WELLINGTON, Monday. The professional boxing contest between Reg. Trowern, of Auckland, and Nelson McKnight, or Hamilton, was all over in less than four rounds. .AleKnight, who had to make weight before the contest,, developed a bad attack of stage fright on entering the ring, and Trowern made a. chopping block of him till, the unequal contest was stopped before the fourth round had closed.
The weights were: Trowern, 9st 841 b; McKnight, 9st 131 b. The Aucklander opened confidently and showed clever ringcraft. MfcKnight ducked a right swing, causing Trowern to spin round like a teetotum. Trowern was judging distance well and easily back moved the feeble lefts that the Hamilton man apologetically put forward. The Aucklander had much the better of the close range work, and piled up a good lead in the opening round.
Having taken the measure of. his man Trowern took a confident aggressive in the second session. Feinting with the left he brought the right hard over to the side of the head, and a little later tilted the ex-amateur's head back with a straight left, which had the full weight of the body behind it. McKnight was badly rattled, and it was clearly apparent that he was suffering from stage fright. Trowern did as he liked in the third round. McKnight could not put up even the semblance of a defence, and oven left himself open when uncovering from the smothers he was forced repeatedly to go into. He was so dazed that, the referee had to make him aware that the gong had gone and direct his tottering steps to his corner. The Hamilton man made a despairing effort to take the. aggressive in the fourth round, and landed a left hook and a right uppercut as Trowern bored in. It was the last flicker before the lamp went out, however, and thereafter Trowern did as he liked. A well-timed right swung to the .side of the head made McKnight sag at the knees, a.nd a left hook to the jaw sent him reeling back upon the ropes. It was apparent to all that the end had come, and in order to save the beaten man unnecessary punishment the referee hoisted Trowern's right hand in token of victory.
There was only one explanation for the feeble showing made by McKnight. The importance/ of the occasion was too much for him.
