MATAMATA UNION.

WAIRERE V. WALTON

This senior match was of considerable interest, and a large number of spectators was attracted to the Walton ground on Saturday in anticipation of a close contest. The visitors, however, did not field their strongest team, several junior players having to be requisitioned. Walton scored a most decisive victory, running out winners by 27 points to nil, the game in the third and fourth quarters being of a onesided character. Wairere set the ball in motion and took play to the home quarters with great dash, and for a moment or so Walton was on the defensive. A penalty in-favour of the home team proved of little assistance. Walton backs essayed passing-' tactics, but the visitors' tackling at this stage was very efficient. The home team worked to mid-field, where Wairere backs mulled, letting Walton into the visitors' territory. Wairere was forced to touch down and an interchange of long kicking ensued. From a touch line-out Wairere secured- and-invaded Walton's 23, where C. Mann did a pretty bit of saving. Then, followed very even play in" md-flcld; but Walton defaulting the visitors were, enabled to attack strenuously. j_G. Kirk brought relief by marking and Walton rushed up, W. Kuhtz prominently figuring in the-advance. Wairere found touch in their own 25, and being subsequently penalised, L, Fausett made a creditable shot at goal, which narrowly missed its mark. Again Wairere rushed, but C. Woods cleared boastfully. Kuhtz again shone, putting in a.brilliant kick, followed upby a useful run by Fausett. Walton was now-in real aggressive mood, and Wairere's full-back was heavily taxed. G. Kirk made a burst for the line, but passing forward, a score was .narrowly missed. Then Fausett missed; crossing by inches only; R- Dawson, however, fielding nippily, notched Walton's first try. The major points were not registered, Walton forwards now bore down the opposition and gained, much .ground. Walton was penalised, but C. Mann, again conspicuous for smart work, nullified his opponents' advantage. Walton's pressure increased, and the forwards, dribbling up in good style, kept the defence busy. G. Harrison (Wairere) relieved by a fine run and put his side in attacking shape; Walton being penalised, the visitors were in a position to score, but Green's kick failed. Walton was once more in the visitors' half, and gruelling forward play ensued. Wairere marked, but made no headway. Harrison again got going, but was smartly tackled and the home team continued the attack.

Half-time score: Walton 3, Wairere 0

The second half opened with little advantage to either side. Then The home side slowly asserted supremacy, and Fausett made a dash for the line. The visitors were penalised in their homo quarters and from a scrum Dawson crossed the line. L. Kirk failed to convert. Wairere revived for a short spell, and then ,T. Abraham headed a strong forward advance by Walton, which gained considerably. Walton three-quarters took up the running, and G. Kirk came within an ace of scoring. Walton defaulted and the visitors recovered some ground. Kicking exchanges were to Walton's advantage. W. Kuhtz made a strong run and, transferring to L. Kirk, the latter scored. J. Dixon took the kick, which proved unsuccessful. Walton' resumed the attack and gave an inspiriting display of the passing game. Wairere hack division put up a strenuous defence, but H. Kirk broke through and'scored a try, which Kuhtz converted. In the last quarter Walton backs were untiring in their- attacks, but forward passing let them down. The advantage remained in Walton's hands, L. Fausett dropping a goal and Claude Woods initiating splendid passing tactics. Wairere was notably weakening, and scores for Walton came in quick succession. W. Fisk gained a try (unconverted)., J. Dixon secured a penalty goal, and.C, Mann crossed with an unconverted try. Thus the game ended in a record win in senior matches this season. Mr. Clover, of Matamata, was referee. The, third grade match resulted: — Matamata 0, Walton 0. Tills was a bright, exhibition of good football.
