BURDEN ON THE STATE

The number of Avives and children whoso support is a burden on the State owing to deserting and defaulting husbands was mentioned by Mr 0 Seymour at the annua! meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last nigh|.

The speaker said the legal profession had to deal with many cases of men who deserted their wives and children and who refused to support, them, and the burden of their maintenance, was thrown upon the charitable aid boards. He moved that the executive be instructed to investigate tho extent to which the public is suppc cling wives and children and others who should properly he supported by defaulting husbands and others, with a view to formulating stricter legislation to deal with them. The matter was left to I,lie incoming executive.
