MATCH AT EASTBOURNE.

(Reuter.) LONDON, June 16

At Eastbourne a tennis match is being played between Britain and tlie American Wimbledon contingent on Davis Cup lines —four games of singles and one of doubles. The first day’s play results were: — Casey (America) heat Wheatley, 6—o. 6—l. 6—3.

Gilbert (Britain) beat Hcnnessy, 6—2, C—3, 7—5.

An incident at Ihe meeting of Misses Boyd and Akhurst in tossing a coin greatly a mimed the Australians in London, because of its typical Australian sporting spirit. Miss Akhurst said it was “silly to think wc had come all the way from Australia to play each other; we are such good friends, and I do not like the idea of one putting the other out,” so they tossed, and the loser announced a walkover. Miss Akhurst was disappointed at not meeting Mrs Lycett, who withdrew, but had a doughty opponent in Mrs Gough, who is a player of note in India.

ANDERSON AT WIMBLEDON.

SATISFIED WITH HIS FORM,

Anderson again practised at Wimbledon, playing in singles against Barclay and Lycett. He beat the former comfortably. G—o, G—2, G—3, and was leading Lycett, G—o, G—3, when the latter, feeling indisposed, had to return lo the pavilion. Anderson says he is feeling improved in health and is pleased with his form to-day.
