£l00,000 PICTURE ROBBERY
Art treasures valued at nearly £lOO,OOO are reported missing from the home of Mr Martin Weinschenck, at Hollywood. The loss was discovered upon 1 Mr Weinschenck’s return from a holiday. Assisting the police in their investigations is the representative of a London firm of underwriters which insured the collection for £43,000. Among the paintings cut from their frames or taken away with the frames are "The Daughter of Philip 11. of Spain,” by Coelio, valued at £27,000: “Vocal Lessons,” by Metsu, valued at £25,000; “Boy Blowing Bubbles," by Murillo, valued at £12,000; a “Madona and Child,” by Correggio; and pictures by the Teniers and others. A number of art treasures were left behind badly damaged by the vandals, and a marble Christ lay on the floor broken to bits. One painting bore the mark of a shoe; £lO,OOO worth of antique silver locked in a cabinet was untouched. It is suggested that the thieves were hired by a collector willing to go to any lengths to obtain valuable works of art.
