AUSTRALIAN CRICKET.
HOBBS’ COMMENT. STYLE FAR FROM CLASSIC. (Sydney Sun Cable.) (Received May 2. 9.15 a.m.)’ LONDON, May L Hobbs, in a second article, claim that the English batsmen have maintained the classic style more successfully than the Australians. He says: “We were repeatedly astonished to see Australian batsmen connecting when playing with a cross bat at a leg-spin ball, whereas Englishmen would have got right on the pitch of the ball with a straight bat in orthodox fashion. The Australians seemed able to judge how the ball was coming. Probably after two years’ experience in Australia we should be able to hit for four many balls which went unpunished.” Hobbs is convinced that the unorthodox Australians will make a sorry mess of things on English wickets unless they alter their tactics. They may be able to alter their style, but only diligent practice will work the oracle. Hobbs considers Taylor and Bardsley the best Australian batsmen.
