GERMAN PRESIDENCY.
ELECTION RESULTS. HINDENBURG CHOSEN. PROVISIONAL FIGURES PUBLISHED BERLIN, April 27. As a result of yesterday’s polling throughout Germany, Field-Marshal von Ilindenburg has been elected President. The following arc the official provisional figures, showing the votes east for each of the three chief candidates : Ilindenburg .. 14,039,000 Marx .. .. 13,753,000 Thaclmann .. 1,932,000 The total number of votes polled was 30,34 6,000. It is estimated that 85 per cent of the electors voted. Public tension apparently increased as the results appeared. Strong police patrols were posted everywhere. An analysis of the voting shows that Ilindenburg led in Pomerania, East Prussia, and Bavaria. Dr. Marx led in Berlin, the Rhineland, and the Ruhr. There was unprecedented excitement at Cologne, where there was heavy polling, and Ilindenburg's supporters were most active. There was a great, turnover in the Rhineland, which was a stronghold of Dr. Marx. It only required a turnover of 6 per cent compared with the first ballot on March 29, to give Ilindenburg the victory. Excited crowds massed in hundreds of spots in Berlin to hear the results. The polling closed at 6 p.m., and the first results were known at 8 p.m. There were immense ovations when the first figures published showed that Ilindenburg was the victor for the Potsdam district. Men and women waved the old Monarchist colours and sang “Deutschland über Alles.” All bared their heads in spite of a rainstorm.
Further cheers broke out when gains for Ilindenburg were announced in the working districts of Berlin. Any success for Dr. Marx was received with hooting, cat-calls and groans. There were numerous clashes between rival electioneering factions. Two persons were killed and others were injured in riots near Karlsruhe. A Nationalist crowd tried to storm the Town Hall at Kalibor, Silesia, and collided with the police. Many arrests were made. LATER. THE FINAL FIGURES. (Received April 28, 9.5 a.m.) BERLIN, April 27.
