In connection with the siege o l Shenkin, where Mr Tompkinson, an agent for the China Inland Mission, is stationed, and for whose safety considerable anxiety is felt, it is stated ‘that I lie brigands who are holding the town have been pursued for some time by Government troops. Mr Tompkinson was sent out with the brigand leader to negotiate with the attacking forces, but their efforts were unsuccessful and only made Ihe authorities more determined to regain Hie town. The brigands feel that Mr Tompkinson’s efforts made things worse, and lliercfore avow llial they will kill him directly the city is taken.
