ARBITRATION COURT.

APPRENTICESHIP ORDERS. IN ENGINEERING TRADE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday. The question of apprenticeship orders for the engineering- trade throughout the Dominion was before the Arbitration Court to-day. Mr Hammond, for the employees, haid the Court was faced with the difficulty of preparing a Dominion order from four partial recommendations made by the local committees at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. It had been agreed to accept the Otago recommendation, subject to certain modifications. It was recommended that the proportion of the total number of apprentices to the total number of journeymen shall be not more than two to one in the engineering branch, and one to one in the moulding c.nd boilermaking branches. The minimum rates of wages to- be paid to apprentices were, racommended to be: First year iss per week, second year 20s, third year 255, fourth year 30s, add fifth year 40s. As to technical training it was suggested '.hat the radius should be left -open, having regard to local conditions. Provision was- made with respect to lost time and overtime, the details of various conditions affecting apprentices being discussed at length. Application was made to the Court by the Motor Mechanics Union to have assistants in the trade brought under the provisions of /the Apprentices Act. The question of wages was left to the decision of the Court, which intimated its general intention to fix them at the same rates as for engineering apprentices.
