CAMBRIDGE-BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Garni bridge Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. Those present were:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestly), Crs. H. A. Bell, M. Wells, A. H. Gascoigne, T. Kelly, L. M.Morrjn, W. Moore, T. F. Richards, A. W. Wilkinson, P. T. Granville, and the Town Clerk (Mr W. S. Milburn). Sanitary Inspector.

The Health Department, Auckland, pointed out that the Sanitary Inspector should be placed in a legal position regarding the work of the borough, and asking the Council to formally appoint Mr Albert P. Bennett to the position. It was resolved that Mr A. P. Bennett be formally. appointed santtaO' inspector to the Cambridge Borough Council.

Great South Road

In reply to the Council's letter, the clerk-of the Hamilton Borough Council wrote stating that his Council were prepared to co-operate with the Cambridge Council in impressing upon the District Highways Boards . the necessity for the construction of the Great South Road in permanent material at the earliest possible moment. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor to deal with. Local Bodies' Conference.

The Mayor reported that as a delegate from this Council he had attended the Local Bodies' Conference ! at Auckland. There were 137 delegates present to .discuss the proposed Motor Vehicles Bill. It was decided to impose a tax of 5s per horse-power per annum on cars. The Mayor did not favour this, but favoured the Horn J. G. Coates' proposal of a petrol and tyre tax. . It was resolved that this Council support the petrol and tyre tax, and that the member for the. district be to support Mr Coates' proposal. . Appointment of Engineer. It was resolved that Mr H. .Roche be appointed engineer to j the Council for the purpose of carrying out the proposed water and roads work, and that he be asked to meet the Legal and Finance Committee. Victoria Street Entrance.

' The Cambridge Riibgy Union wrote that- the Union's officials would do all in their power to assist the Council in keeping the motor traffic in order during the progress of football matches, and suggested that a new entrance be made to the Square, either in Queen Street, or at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets. It was decided to take no action- jn the matter of making a new entrance. Hall Exit and Painting.

The Town Clerk was instructed to draw up specifications for the painting and 'repairing of the Town Hall, and also call fenders for the erection of an emergency exit, from the gallery.
