MODERN PIRACY.
WHISKY CARGO LOOTED. SEIZED AT REVOLVER POINT. FOR TRANSFER TO RUM-RUNNERS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) PARIS, Sept. 17. A romance of the sea worthy of R. L. Stevenson's pen is recalled by the arrest oC Captain Jerome Phaff, a German-American, on a charge of piracy on the 'high seas. The story runs that the steamer Mulhousc left Canada in June with a cargo of 32,000 cases of Scotch whisky for a destination in Europe. On June 25 the Mulhouse met the schooner Patara, whose crew, under Captain Phaff, boarded- the steamer and held up her crew at the revolver point. Meanwhile six other rumrunning ships appeared. Phaff's men forced the Mulhouse's crew to carry the whisky to the Patara and other schooners and freighters. When the Mulhouse was emptied she was allowed to return to Halifax, where she reported the piracy.
