YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS. AMENDMENTS OF LAND BILL. PROGRESS OF MEASURES. (By Telegraph—Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Reports of committees and departments, and answers to questions occupied the House of Representatives this afternoon. Notice of motion to introduce the Newmarket Empowering Bill was given by Mr J. A. Lee. The report oh the administration of Western Samoa was laid on the table after a brief discussion. The following local bills were reported from various committees with amendments: Auckland Abattoir (Hon. C. J. Parr), Auckland Power Board Amendment (Mr V. 11. Potter), Whakatane Borough Empowering (Mr F. F. Hockly), and Hauraki Plains County Council Empowering (Mr T. W. Rhodes). The Opotiki Hospital District Bill (Mr K. S. Williams) was returned without amendment. The Public Accounts Committee returned the Stamp Duties Amendment and Land and Income Tax (annual) Bills with recommendations for amendments. In the case of the latter the proposal-was to halve the concession in the bill in regard to land tax, the committee being o£ opinion, and the Prime Minister agreeing, that higher exemptions should be given on account of mortgages. In the evening a number of amendments to the Land Bill were brought down by Governor-General's message. These were chiefly designed to benefit Crown tenants. The bill was reported from committee with the Government ■amendments unaltered. The Amusement Tax Amendment Bill was passed. The Local Bodies' Loans Amendment Bill passed through the committee stage with the addition of two Government amendments. The House rose at 12.10 a.m.
