Up till the recent rains fell it -was reported that the milk yield was decreasing. Now it is reported that in many cases the returns are on the increase.

By ain Order-in-Council in the. current Gazette, the date of holding the general election of the Mangawara tiiver Board has been postponed tilt February 12.

The Te Awamutu Electric Power Board has been authorised to raise i4OOO, being part of its £25,000 loan to assist consumers to install motors and electric plant, for 20 years atid to pay 6 per cent interest thereon. Some time ago it was mentioned that it was intended to erect a new factory at Mutumaoho. It is now staled that the Norfolk Dairy Co. intends making a start with the new building almost immediately. The contractor for the removal of the earthwork at the River Road subway at Claudelands has completed his contract, and the roadway is now being largely used by motor cars and tthef vehicles. The metalling of tho road has not yet been taken in hand. In the Police Court, Waihi, yesterday, a young married man, Joseph Gray, residing at Owharoa, Waikino. was sentenced to three months in Auckland gad for having used tbscene language on the Wathi-Pac-roa road.

The Hamilton traffic bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic from midnight \to-day until mid-day tomorrow. Pedestrians arc also warned that in crossing the bridge they wlll be liable to be splashed with bitumen ipray and are asked not to * S loiter.

Ratepayers who have not yet attended to their rate demands are warned that Wednesday, the 30th instant., is the last day on which the amounts duo can bo paid without the addition of a 10 per cent, penally. The rates office closes at 4 p.m. each day.

Much growth is in evidence on newly-cut hay paddocks, and it is an- | ticipa'ted that in some cascn another crop will be gained. The Railway Department has acquired an option over approximately 28 acres fronting Ainslie Road, Paeroa. The Borough Council decided to form and metal the road, connect the water supply, and lay a sewer, giving a man-hole for inspection. The Railway Department states that if the Council undertakes the work it will erect from twelve to fifteen houses on the site selected within four to six weeks. The Commissioner of Taxes draws attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day's issue that the due date of payment of the incometax is' on Friday, February S, 1924. Additional tax will accrue if the tax is not paid on or before February 29, 1924. The demands will be posted from the office of the Commissioner of Taxes on or about February 1, 1924. Demands must bo presented with all payments, and if a demand has not been received lite Commissioner should be communicated with. As a result of its investigations in regard to the unloading and handling of frozen meat in Great Britain, the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has appointed a supervisor to watch the unloading of each vessel. The British Incorporated Society of Meal, Importers recommended that it was very essential that an inspector should bo present to watch the interests of importers and shippers. Not only will this supervisor watch the handling of meat generally, but he will also inspect the general condition of eaeli shipment and report to the Board. The. London office of the Now Zealand Meat Producers' Board has also made arrangements with the Salvage Association and the importers of frozen meat for the Board's inspector to attend every survey for damage of New Zealand meat, and thus be in a position to see the extent of the damage, and also lo locate, if possible, where the damage occurred. Since the Board appointed local supervisors to watch the handling and loading at this end. there lias been a very marked improvement, and the Board anticipates similar results at the other end. A Hamilton motorist, driving to Gambridge the other night, had ait unpleasant experience. In respect to Anniversary Day holiday, whiob falls on Tuesday this year, the Labour Department has replied to the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce that the holiday would be "Mondayised" as far as the shopkeepers and grocers' awards were concerned. The Borough Council has been communicated with, and a request forwarded asking Monday, January 28, to be declared a public holiday. There is a difference of opinion about the matter, however, and several business men state they will observe Tuesday, January 29. The banks will observe that day, and it is probable that legal offices will also close their doors on the date in question. The factories' award says that • Anniversary Day shall bo the holiday. Then again, the Municipal Fire Brigade intend holding their annual sports on Monday, January 28. Thus there is a "bit of a mix up" as far as Morrinsville is concerned.

A most peculiar accident happened to one ■' of the N.Z. Co-op. Dairying Co.'s electric trucks about noon on Thursday. It was on. the road between Waitoa and Waihou, and had commenced the ascent of a hill When a bolt In connection with the stceringrorl came adrift. Without warning the truck turned at right angles to the road and was precipitated into the nearby swamp, where it stood up on end. Fortunately the driver, a man named McLeod, had the presence of mind to .jump, landing in the swamp up to his waist. lie pulled himself out unhurt. Meanwhile the truck sank into the soft mud past its electric battery box. Soon three other electric trucks from Waitoa factory arrived on the scene, and after attaching ropes and chains herculean efforts were made to pull the "lame cluck" out, Passing motorists on the read to and from Te Aroha were held up for some time, and when the job of placing the truck on terra firma was -completed a long string of cars were set in motion to their various destinations.
