AN OFFICER SHOT.
TRAGEDY ON PHILOMEL. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Monday. A shooting tragedy, which resulted, two hours later, in the death of First Lieutenant Edward Alexander Anderson, of H.M.S. Philomel, occurred at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, on board the vessel.
The unfortunate man was found lying in the captain’s dining-room, with a serious wound in the head, and a revolver close by. The injured man was taken to the hospital, whore he died at 5.15 p.m. The last man who spoke to deceased was . apparently the • quartermaster doing gangway'duty on board the Philomel. It is stated that deceased asked the quartermaster if the captain were on board, and was told that he had left the ship. Ten minutes later the quartermaster heard the report of a shot, and upon search being made, Lieutenant Anderson'was found.
It is understood that the revolver was the property of the commarfder of the ship. . The deceased was a native of Britain, and had been in New 7 Zealand about three years. He was about 28 years of age, and unmarried.
