JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURE
The November issue of the Journal of Agriculture opens •with another article of E. B. Levy’s grasslands series on the Taranaki back country, which is typical of much other hilly' bushburn country in the North Island. The growth-form and habits of secondarygrowth in relation to its control is the epecial subject dealt with, and the article is generously illustrated with explanatory photographs. Lambbreeding for the meat trade, with special reference to ihe white-faced breeds and crosses of sheep, is the subject of a very practical article by J. G. Cook. An account of last season’s operations on the Puwera and Albany experimental areas, by T. 11. Patterson, should prove of special interest to settlers in the Northern gumlands region, whose problems are dealt with at these stations. B. C. Aston contributes notes on some littoral and other soils analysed at the Department’s chemical laboratory. The new champion Jersey cow of the Dominion—Pretty’s Flirt —and her record of 10101 b butter-fat are interestingly commented on by W. M. Singleton. A paper on Electricity in Dairy Factories, by C. Vowell, will be found specially informative to managers and other dairy technicians. Among other articles the live-stock division presents a well illustrated description of a good model for suburban dairies supplying milk for town consumption. The monthly notes, covering operations in general farming, fruitgrowing, poultrykeeping, bee-keeping, and gardening, are replete with useful seasonal information. Among miscellaneous matter is an official estimate of the current season’s lambing throughout the North Island.
