AFTER THE 'QUAKE.
DETAILS OF RELIEF WORK. WILD BEASTS AT LARGE. In i. / HEROES AND GHOULS. United Press Association. Received October 9, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, October 9. The steamer Meriones, which has reached Newcastle from Japan, brings interesting details' of the relief work. Amongst many pathetic sights, the most touching was that of hundreds of children who were orphaned by the disaster, and who were wandering the streets crying piteously for their parents they will never again see. For the first few days food and other neoessaries were very scarce, but when the relief ship arrived they were plentiful. Good progress has been made in removing the homeless masses from their stricken surroundings. The Zoological. Gardens in Yokohama were amongst trie places destroyed, releasing the wild beasts, which created consternation and death until steps could be'taken to destroy them.
Cherry Blossom Park presented a remarkable appearance. Thousands who fled there were surrounded by flames and roasted to death. It is estimated that 8000 who were so penned iifthe park perished.
Tales are told of the heroism of.the Japanese in rescue work, but also of the ghoulish work by robbers, searching the dead and wounded among the debris.
