THE MEAT TRADE.
NEED FOR ORGANISATION. N.Z. SCHEME EULOGISED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, October 7. Mr Wheatlcy, president of the Victorian Pastoralists' Association, who has been inquiring into the meat trade, says the Australian breeders must adopt recognised beef strains if they desire a better footing in the market. They also should market younger animals. They could not deceive Smilhfleld experts, whose observations never fail to identify an old beast. Australia badly needed an organisation similar to the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, which, possessing direct representation in London, had already secured valuable benefits in reduced freights and better organisation of shipment, and was a most effective agency for improving the condition of produce. If each Dominion had a similar organisation, all could co-operate in their common interest. The English traders were favourably disposed towards Australian meat, but the producers suffered because their was no continuity of supply. They also failed to adhere to a standard grading.
