Two fatal encounters between the police and liquor smugglers are rclorted at Los Angeles. Five hundred police turned out in an attempt to catch a motor car allegedly carrying a parly of bootleggers, who had been hailed by Mr George Christie, a Federal prohibition officer, whom they siiot. The police engaged in a running battle with the motor car through Hollywood before their quarry escaped. The second case occurred at Toronto, where the police attacked a motor boat attempting to carry 2500 bottles of whisky to Buffalo. John Cough, son or the captain of the motor Ipoat, was shot dead.
