ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.

WAIROA, Friday.

A nasty accident occurred at Waikokopu last night. A returned soldier, an employee of the harbour board, was stepping into a Ashing launch when he fell on a sheath-knife, which penetrated his stomach. An operation was performed after a long journey to the Wairoa hospital. The man is in a critical condition.

HOKITIKA, Thursday.

At an inquest held at Kakatahi yesterday the coroner, Mr Evans, returned a verdict that James Murtagh was accidentally drowined. From the evidence it was assumed that deceased lost his seat in the saddle when entering a ford, and. was dragged through the river owing to one foot being retained in the stirrup, and the horse freed itself on leaving the river on the other side, deceased being apparently kicked unconscious and falling downwards in a pool a few inches deep.
