COMBATING MEAT TRUST

FARMERS’ UNION’S ACTION,

NECESSITY OF CO-OPERATION. At the executive meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held yesterday, it was decided to enter a strong protest against the action of the Meat Board in allowing Vestey, Ltd., to get a further hold over the meat trade, as this, it was contended, would have the effect of crushing the smaller co-operative companies. Mr R. D. Duxfield said that as things were going at present it would be only a question of time before the proprietary concerns were allowed to absorb the farmers’ businesses. Mr Duxfield instanced the case of the Farmers’ Freezing Company’s works at llorotiu, which, owing to the settlers’ disloyalty, were now lying idle.
