Diving bells were used, and the contractors noticed that the bells seemed to be down longer than necessary, so they investigated, and discovered that the men in the bells working on the foundations had discovered a new amusement, which, consisted in catching crabs, marking their backs, and setting them to crawl from one end of the bell to the other, while the men bet on the "races."
