(United Press Association.) SYDNEY, October 4

The Consul-General for Japan has received a cable giving the latest statistics of earthquake casualties and damage. The total deaths to date amount to 103,000, injured 125,000, missing 235,000. The buildings destroyed total 534,000. The cstimatod value of the destroyed property is £500,000,000. The present population of Tokio is 1,430,000, while prior to the disaster it was 2,500,000.

EXCESS OF SUPPLIES. SOME FOODS ROTTING. Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn. OSAKA, October 3. The lavish distribution of earthquake relief in Tokio and Yokohama has glutted the cities of the Kanto district, which arc unable to absorb the vast quantites of supplies, hence foods are rotting or being redistributed, while the less perishable are being stored 1 where possible. Often sheds arc actually being built to accommodate surplus articles of luxury, which are being sold to commercial guilds- for resale at controlled prices. The supply of petrol now exceeds the needs of the stricken areas, which paradoxically become the source of supply for those that escaped undamaged by the earthquake.
