DAY BY DAY.

The Allies have evacuated Turkey and,

Evacuation of I Turkey.

for good or id, the Turks are to be left to themselves. The negotiations leading up to Wednesday's consum-

mation were long and acrimonious, and at times it almost appeared as if an open breach were imminent. Happily, this was averted, but when it was eventually announced that all poinls had been considered and decided, there was a general feeling that that end had only been reached by the Allies making substantial concessions in order to meet the demands of Turkey, which took up the attitude of no compromise. Many who are regarded as being in a position to judge ventured the opinion that though the Allies won the war it was Turkey who won the peace. It is, therefore, in a reassuring to read that Mr Stanley' Baldwin, the British Prime Minister, has informed the overseas delegates at the Imperial Conference that the Treaty has not damaged British prestige, that the essential interests of the Empire have been amply safeguarded, that it has done something to reconcile the different national and religious interests which have so long troubled that quarter of the world, and has laid the foundation for a period of comparative tranquility and economic reconstruction. It will be devoutly hoped that Mr Baldwin's faith will be amply justified and that the prognostications of future trouble will fail to materialise.
