TRAGEDY IN MELBOURNE.
TWO WOMEN SHOT. THE HUSBAND'S STORY. United Press Association. Received October 4, 12.10 p.m. MELBOURNE, October 4. A mysterious double tragedy is reported from South Melbourne. -Edward Dougherty rushed into a doctor's rooms in an excited state, and reported that his wife had shot another woman and then turned the revolver on herself. The police visited' the bouse, and found Mrs Dougherty and Mrs Lay shot dead, with an automatic pistol with all cartridges discharged alongside.
The police slate that Dougherty was separated from his wife, who sued him for maintenance. Mrs Lay rented a. house, and three months ago Mrs Dougherty and two children came to ledge willi her. Dougherty called to see his wife, and an argument ensued, during which Dougherty produced a pistol. According to his statement his wife snatched this from him and fired several shots, one striking Mrs Lay, who in falling knocked Dougherty down. When he rose he saw his wife lying on the floor. The room showed signs of a struggle. The police detained Dougherty en a charge of carrying unlicensed firearms.
