MOTOR ACCIDENTS.
A MAGISTRATE'S POWERS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association, CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
Mr Justice Reed, commenting on a charge of manslaughter in respect to a motor-car collision, said accidents were on the increase owing to the increased number of cars in use, and where negligence was proved there should be punishment. He thought the term manslaughter often frightened juries into acquittal, and the charge might be altered to causing death by negligent driving. The power of prohibiting persons from driving for a number of years'-'might be extended to the magistrates.
