In reply to a question, the Hon. R. H Rhodes (Minister of Defence) informed Mr- J. A. Lee that no compulsory parades of boys had been held for the purpose of takng part in carnivals or public entertainments. The Defence Act prescribes both the amount and nature of obligatory training in the New Zealand military forces, and Mr. Lee should be aware that parades for the amusement of the public are not part'' of the training laid down. The Minister saw no objection to a company of cadets voluntarily taking part in a public function, as such action naturally follows thentraining in one of the underlying principles of good citizenship. Public displays also served to bring before the general public the good work done during the period of military training.
