BOROUGH LEASES.
RAISING THE RENTS.
1 COUNCILLOR'S PROTEST.
The practice of the Hamilton Council, and other local bodies, in 'the past of increasing the rents in certain cases of subdivisions of borough leases, was mentioned by Cr P. A. de la Mare at tlio meeting of the council last night, when he moved:* "That a committee consisting of the Mayor, Cr Watts and the mover be set up to report as to whether it Is possible to lay down a general rule in respect to the increase of rent on subdivisions in case of borough leases." The speaker mentioned that in a recent case brought to his notice a certain local body had raised the rent by 133 1-3 per cent, on the land being subdivided. He thought the local body in question had, by doing this, taken upon itself a revision of the whole contract. It seemed to him that it was quite fair where a subdivision occurred, that an extra charge should be made for additional administration. ]t should not be for a local body, however, to say they would take action to slop speculation in any particular case. There should be a general principle laid down. In any future leases they should, perhaps, state that in the case of subdivision the question of rental would be re-opened. The motion was carried.
