IMPORTED GRASS SEED.
THE NEW REGULATIONS. NO FEAR OF RETALIATION. In reference to the article which appeared in .the press concerning the new regulations regarding the importation of grass seed from Australia, Dr. Reakes, the Director of Agriculture, makes the following statement: — “Regarding the criticisms of .the re,gulations just.issued, which compel the fumigation of grass seed allowed to be imported from Australia, inquiries show that these were found necessary as a result of information which had reached the Government from a reliable source.
"The Department of Agriculture realises that no risk can be taken in the direction of the infection of tick fever entering New Zealand, and the safeguards provided by the regulations aim at minimising this risk. “In the past the State and the Commonwealth Governments have cooperated fully with New Zealand in matters such as this, and there is no need to fear that retaliatory measures in any direction will result from what lias been done.”
