DAVIS CUP CONTEST.

AUSTRALIA v. JAPAN. SIiI.MIDZU BEATS HAWKES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW YORK, August 8. In the Davis Cup contest between the Australians and Japanese the first day's matches will be Hawke's versus Shimklzu, and Anderson versus Fukuda. , CHICAGO, August 9. The Australians began their match in the' Davis Cup preliminary against Japan to-day. Hawkes" met Zonzo Shimidzu, and was defeated, 6—4, 3—6, 2—6, o—l, o—4. The match started with Shinildzu holding a material advantage, in that he had bealen Hawkes iii 1921. This made Hie latter nervous before the start. In the first set Shimidzu's service appeared soft, but it had deceptive qualities about it. Later he recovered his pace, and with unexpected hard drives caught Hawkes unawares The heat was terrific, and the Australian seemed to suffer from it, Anally losing the set. In tile next set Hawkes steadied down, and outplayed the Japanese in every department. He went for accuracy'in place or speed, and despite his opponent's doggedness won comfortably.

The third set was also taken by tliii Australian, whose ground strokes were very good, though his service lacked tne speed and twist that made it so effective against the llawaiians. So far there was nothing spectacular in the play, which was deficient in verve and speed, but Hawkes stole a march on Sliimidzu, who apparently expected him to wear himself out, as in 1921. Hawkes had, however, learned his lesson well.
