A MILLION WANTED. N.S.W. SCHEME. In view of the expressed determination of the Government to introduce a Roads Board, a conference of delegates from ithe shires of the State unanimously approved of its creation, .provided its policy -was according- to lines defined toy conference (says a Sydney paper). Gr. "W. Pyle (president of the Shires Association of New South Wales, and who is president of the Berrigan Shire Council) was in the chair. Cr. H. J. Bate (vice-presi-dent of Eurobodalla Shire) and Cr. Alex. M'Arthur» (vice-president of Carrathool Shire) occupied scats at the table. The State had been subdivided into nine areas, and each was represented by three councillors. Cr. Bennett (Timbrebongle Shire) moved: —"That; in view of the expressed determination of the Government to introduce a roads board, this conference expresses its approval, provided that it is constituted on lines . defined by conference." j This was carried. Conference, at the afternoon session, passed resolutions which' will he duly submitted to the Minister as expressing Hie principles which the shires of the State desire should be observed in the creation of a roads board. These generally embody the committee's recommendations, and ' include: — "That the Government should provide funds sufficient to enable -the board to expend at least £1,000,000 a year on main and developmental roads outside the metropolitan area, and that the amount appro- * priated by the bill be over and above whatever is expended by the councils."

"That the board consist of three members, two of whom must be practical road engineers, and ilio third to have local Government experience." "That conference is of opinion that as far as possible, the board should carry out all construction and maintenance road work with the council's staff, and not by its own employees." "That the whole question of motor fees be revised and with a view to increasing the amounts paid on service cars, lorries, and professional cars, and that the moneys obtained, less cost of collection, be devoted to roads purposes."
