General Gouraud, late French High; Commissioner in Syria, has been appointed military governor of Paris. The Hon. G- J. Anderson, Minister for Labour, has been suffering from influenza.

Mr G. T. Murray, District Public Works Engineer, of Auckland, was in Hamilton to-day. Mr. 11. H. Carr, registrar of the Native Land Court at Gisborne', has been appointed 5 Judge of the Native Land Court.

Mr F. Lye, M.P. for Waikato, has been granted four days' leave of absence from Parliament on account of family bereavement. , Rev. Cyril William Emmett, Dean of University College. Oxford, died at a New York 'hospital from pneumonia after a week's illness. The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister for Education, has sufficiently recovered from 'his attack of influenza to resuma his Ministerial duties. Mr E. Jull, of Waipawa, President of the N.Z. Mr N. G. Gribble, of Hamilton, whoi has been appointed to represent the Auckland Land Agents' Association at the annual conference, will leave for Christehurch by the Main Trunk express to-night. Professor M'cMurrich, zoologist and professor of anatomy, Toronto, who is. visiting the Dominion prior to attending Hie Pan-Pacific Science Congress in Melbourne, left Auckland! yesterday on a trip to Rotorua. , Mr. It. E. Shacklock, one of the directors of the well known firm of 11. E. Shacklock and Co., died suddenly at Duncdin yesterday as a result of heart seizure. He is survived by a wife and daughter. Mr J. P. Maxwell, of Wellington, one of the members of the Board of Inquiry which is investigating the circumstances of the railway disaster at O'ngarue on July G, was admitted to a private hospital in Auckland on Sunday night, suffering from pleurisy. The death is announced at the Thames of Mr Patrick Montague, aged Gl, a well-known Thames resident of 31* years' sfanding. Deceased was a fluent Maori linguist, and ■ trustee of the Loyal Charles Bruce Lodge of Oddfellows. He leaves a wife, five sons, and two daughters, all grown up.
