The rebel commander Maritz, in a statement to the press from Laurcnco Marques, denies the accusation that he took moneys or materials belonging to the Union Government. Ho declares that on several occasions he prevented his men from flghlipg, and asserts that when he' surrendered his men to General Vandcventer, the latter told him that General Smuts wanted to know whether he was prepared to take up his position again, but gave him the option tff leaving tho country. Maritz now asks for an inquiry.
