MATAMATA COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer, Mr F. Shannon, submitted the following report at Friday's meeting of the Council:In the Matamata riding the county teams have been engaged repairing roads at Waharoa; but work has been delayed by the continual rain. Surface work and repairs have been carried out by Pemberton in other parts of the riding. In the Peria riding surface work and repairs have been carried out. Metal has been carted to repair the Waharoa-Ma|amata Road. Kinncar's work has been delayed by the wet, and I would recommend that his contracts for Salisbury's Road and the Farmers' Road be deferred until line weather. In the Te Poi * riding surface work and repairs have been carried out. I let a contract to Gardiner to cart metal from the crusher for repairs, and he has done good work with his two Ford trucks: a tipping arrangement,on these trucks has been adjusted to spread the metal as required for repairs. In the Tirau riding surface work and repairs have been carried out. In regard to the Tirau water supply a further 540 feet of piping has been laid, extending the service to the outlying sections; the whole has now been completed in a satisfactory manner at a cost of £IOO less than the estimated cost. A kerb and channel is required in connection with the footpath, and should lie made in concrete. Owing to the weather conditions, Gardiner and McKibbon have been made to proceed with their contracts, and I recommend that these contracts be postponed until the spring, in the Okoroirc riding surface work and repairs have been carried out, concrete pipes have been provided to replace the wood culvert near Bailey's. Gardiner's contract should be postponed until finer weather. In Ihe Putaruru riding the contracts under Henderson have been proceeding as well as the weather would permit. I called tenders for grader work on the Lichfield to Waiotu Road, also for carting spawls from Morrison's quarry; Ihese will come before you to-day. Cole is making fair progress with his contract, considering the weather conditions. A new culvert is required on the Putaruru-Arapuni Road, near Mrs Honshaw's. I also propose putting shingle on the road in front of Tomalin's block, as he has promised to contribute about half the cost. In the Tokoroa riding, McKinnon has made slow progress with his contract, owing to the bad weather; 15 miles have been completed, with the exception of a little trenching-up in places. Two bad places on the road —one near Coles' and the other near Fisher's crossing—I have arranged to have repairs carried out in each case. I called Lenders for grader and surface work to cover the whole of the riding for one year; these will come before you. Many pot-holes are forming in the road between Putaruru and Lichfield. 1 have sent out men to carry out repairs. In the matter of the Maraetai roads, Hals lias made fair progress with the engineering survey, considering the weather, and is proceeding witli plotting the work. In the Karapiro riding surface work has been carried out; Mahobd made a start with his sanding contract, but is held up by the weather. In the Miiungatautari riding surface work has been carried out. Kinnear's contract, owing to weather conditions, is postponed until the spring. The report was adopted.
