For decorative purposes the flags of the mercantile code can be used in a variety of ways, but, even these may be so hung as to convey some very funny messages lo those able to read the mercantile code. The use of signal flags aboard ship, however, is too serious a matter for joking, consequently when an American vessel in Wellington, anchored nut, flew F E R Y, the harbourmaster's staff looked up the code and ran down the F's with lightning speed. They could make nothing out of the message. The master of the ship himself was on shore (says the Post), and he was equally perplexed. He had left all well aboard, as he. thought, so he hustled back as fast as a launch.could oonvey him. "What's the meaning of those flags?" or something like that, he asked. "Oh," said a seaman, "we wanted a ferry boat; that's all. There's nothing the matter on board. What the captain said is not recorded. There is a proper signal for a boat to go to a ship, but it is not F E R Y. "Don't sport with health." —Jackson. You cannot afford to take chance 3 with your health, especially in chilly weather.
