CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. Those present were: The Mayor, Mr C. H. Priestly, Crs A. H. Gascoyne, H. A. Bell, A. Wilkinson, W. Moore, T. Kelly, M. Wells,. P. Glanx ville, and the Town Clerk, Mr Milburn. Taxi Stand. Messrs E. Linstrom and E. Douce, representing the Cambridge Taxi Drivers, waited on the Council, with the view of pointing out the fact that the place allotted as a taxi stand in Empire Street was. quite unsuitable, and asked that the stand be made on the east side of Victoria Street, near the telephone box.. Mr Douce said that it was very inconvenient having to stand their cars In Empire Street, as they were not. easily found by the public. The street was very narrow and it meant doing the block every time a car left the stand, unless the errand was in the same direction as the car was facing. Mr Linstrom said that, in the interest of the public, Empire Street was an unsuitable place for.the taxi stjmd as every car going on to the stand had to negotiate the very sharp turn at the junction of the two streets, where there was always a lot of foot traffic. The Mayor informed the deputation that the present site was set down in i the by-laws as the taxi stand, and he for one did not feel disposed to break that by-law. Mr Linstrom then asked if it were possible to make the stand on the east side of Empire Street, as this would enable the cars to face towards the main thoroughfares when on the stand. Hi It was resolved that his Worship ™ the Mayor be appointed to meet the taxi drivers, and decide tapon the best position for the taxi stand. Municipal Abattoirs. The plans for the proposed municipal abattoirs submitted by Mr F. L. Daniell, architect of Hamilton, wepe referred to the Works Committee to deal with. Late Town, Clerk. The late Town Clerk, Mr J. W. Cocks, tendered a claim for £253 13s 3d for extra service rendered the , council. The letter stated that the claim had been turned down by the old Council, but asked that the matter be re-considered.. Cr A. Wilkinson moved* that the matter be not discussed. Cr Moore seconded the motion. Gr Gascoigne moved an amendment that the application be not definitely ' turned down, but the Council should wait to hear the Power Board’s report on the expense of putting the books in order. Cr Gascoigne said he was very sympathetic towards Mr Cocks, who had rendered good service to the Council, and he would support hip claim. Gr Bell, who seconded the amendment, said that Mr Cocks had xvorked hard for the Council. Cr Williamson stated s that the old Council, out of consideration for Mr Cocks, had dealt with the matter in committee. He as an old . councillor knew why the matter ~~ should not be re-opened, and asked members of the Council if they were anxious for him to state why MiCock’s application had been declined by the old Council. The Mayor put the amendment ,to the meeting, which was carried. Mayor. Remission of Rates. A letter was received from the Y.M.C.A., requesting the remission of last year’s rates. Some of the councillors thought that too many concessions were being made. If councillors wanted to be liberal it should be done with their own money, and not the ratepayers’. After much discussion the request was granted. Municipal Golf Course. Cr Wells moved that a committee representing the Borough Council, Domain Board, and the Chamber of Commerce be set up to collect data with reference to establishing a Municipal Golf Links. Such committee to report to the Council as to the best site, cost rif construction and prospective revenue, and that the following, should comprise the committee: His Worship the Mayor, Crs Bell, Gascoigne, Messrs John Ferguson, E. N. Souter, G: Calvert and M. Well. Cr Wells said there was an influx of mpAabcrs to the local Golf Club, and the links were far too small, and the owner of the property was not willing to renew the lease to the Golf Club. A Golf Links would be a good T,hing for the town, as they would be an inducement to people to visit Cambridge. His Worship the Mayor, in seconding the motion, said that Cambridge could not be said to be a great commercial town, but is becoming very popular and all these sort *of things help to bring people to the town. Cr Richards said the Sunday players on the links would be a worry to the Council when they had to control them. He thought that those who wanted sport should be prepared to pay for it. Proposed Loan. i His Worship the Mayor presented ] to the Council a suggestion to raise a j £50,000 loan for 4 the purpose of a ! gravitation water supply and a roading scheme. Mr Priestly said that the present cost of pumping water would pay interest on £25,000. Congratulations to Town Clerk. On behalf of the Council, his Wor- .; . ship extended to Mr Milburn (Town Clerk) their heartiest good wishes in j his recent marriage. [ \ Cr Bell was appointed a member of ! the Legal and Finance Committee.
