REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEES. WORKS COMMITTEE. Tho Hamilton Borough Council at ltf. meeting last evening- considered several reports from its committees. The Works CeramHUie reported havinv considered the following tenders and made recommendations as under: ' Contract No. 34 (sewerage).—W. E. McDonald, £686 4s 7d, R. E. Eastman, £902 |s 6d, Grinter Bros., £926 Is Cd, M. Hickey, £958 Ifts, Curtis and Dickie, £lOlO lis Bd, Hynes and Leng, £llsO 12s, T. H. Kelly £1573 8s 6d.—That the tender of R. E. Eastman at £902 ■2s'6d was accepted. Contract No. 35 (sewerage).—J. J. Bradley, £93 7s 2d, W. E. McDonald, £lll 18s 6d, T. H. Kelly, £l3B 13s 6d, Grinter Bros., £157 18s, Mason and Purchas, £177 12s 2d, M. Hickey, £l9O 12s. —That the tender of J. J. Bradley at £93 7s 2d be accepted, and McDonald's held in reserve. Contract No. 36, (sewerage).—Grinte'r Bros., £lls 7s. M. Hickey, £155 10s, R. E. Eastman, £195 15s. —That Grinter Bros, tender of £lls 7s, be accepted. Contract No. 37, (Garden Place convenience) .—W. EHerington, £398, Grinter Bros. ,£428, B. Bragley, £434. *—-That the tender of W. EHerington be accepted. Removal of building from Sewer 'Line No. 1 Area. —That the offer of Grinter Bros, to remove and replace ■ the building at a cost of £4O be accepted. L. A. Shirtliff, Noxious Weeds,
. Bropkfield and Nixon Streets. —The . engineer reported that he had given the applicant permission to plough up ' the footway. L. G. Morris, Dedication of Aberfoyle Street- —That the Engineer and as many members of the Committee as can do so inspect the site and report. Whitiora Reserve: Noxious Weeds on Street frontage.—That tenders be called for grubbing and ploughing up the street frontages. H. G. MeCarty, Storm water, Collingwood Street. —That the Engineer be asked to supply a report after investigating the drain. A Gate: Drainage works and conditions of his property.—That the matter be held over' pending a report from the Borough Engineer*. A. J. Morton, Riro Street. —That the letter be received. Technical School.—Levels of Ward
Street property and improvements to h grounds.—That the Engineer be asked to report on the matter of the levels. . Surplus Spoil off the streets.—That the Engineer and business manager be given authority to dispose of surplus spoil off the streets from time to time to the best advantage. Stone from Mt Eden for streets, etc. i—That the Engineer be asked to enquire at what the Department expects .'•to be able to supply metal and that '■'during May the Council take a minimum quantity of 300 yards per week. Plant for Streets, etc., work. —That the Engineer be authorised to leave Immediately on his visit of inspection of tar spraying plants, etc. E. A. Hurst :\ Drainage, Islington Terrace. —That he be advised that tender/ are being called for" the laying "of the sewer to serve.the area. ' 'J. A. Quinlan: Storm Water Ellis and Colombo Streets.—That he be ad-
vised that the drain will be piped under the loan scheme and that meanwhile , the Engineer has arranged to remove the earth slide. J. Morris: Entrance corner Dey and Nixon Streets.—That the Engineer be : given authority to fill the depression .with surplus spoil. Convenience at East End of the
Bridge.— That Mr Paul be advised that the Council considers the question of arranging for a wall is one that the Beautifying Society should attend to. Stone at Boyes' Parh.—That Mr Fowler be advised that the stone will be removed as soon as possible. No. 1 Sewer Area.—That the Mayor
and Assistant Engineer be authorised to go to A.uckland to interview the •Health Department and that if the Department ' will agree the grade be • amended as suggested by the Engineer to 1 in 500. Drainage, Opoia Flat.—That the
Engineer be authorised to commence the septic tank immediately and that ttenders be called for the construction ■of the sewers to serve the area. Tyres for Mr Lowe's Gig (drainage .Inspector).—That the Council allow Mr Low £3 towards the cost of new tyres.
Cr Denz asked in regard to Contract No. 34, why The tender of W. MacDonald was not accepted. The Mayor said that the engineer ■was firmly of opinion that it could not be done for the money. The assistant engineer said that the locality was between King and Commerce Streets in Frankton. Cr Webb moved that the clause dealing with this contract go back to the Committee for favourable consideration. Cr. Denz seconded the motion and Cr Farrer supported it. The Mayor said that the contractor had signed up and the Assistant Engineer remarked tliat the work was already started. The Mayor said (hat Ihc committee had gone carefully into the matter and realised that there was a big mistake in the tender compared with the estimate. Under the circumstances it was futile to leave the motion as it stood. The Committee were guided both in the interests of the tenderer and of the Council, and ratepayers too. Cr. Tristam supported the Mayor's .view.
The Mayor read figures fo support the. Committee's decision, which, fie said, was reached after very careful consideration. Cr Gilbert, said that if was evident to the Committee that this particular tenderer had made a mistake. If was advertised "Ihc lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted." Cr. Webb said that I here appeared nothing left but to • withdraw the motion under the circumstances, but the councillor pointed out that it was possible for the Council to have met this tenderer if he was to lose money on the contract. The report, as a whole was accepted.
Gas, Water, and Electricity.
Street light, No. i bridge, Whitiora. —That the business manager be authorised to write to the Waipa County asking them to contribute half the cost of maintenance, etc., of street lights to be erected on the borough boundary in which they are interested, and that If they are agreeable to do this that a light bo erected at the No. 1 bridge. Whitiora, and soch other places as may be agreed upon by the county and (he councif'r. ?ng'.oeer ami chairman of the cemmittee. ,

Waikato Valley Dairy Company, supply oT power.—That the supply be offered on the terms suggested. Motor cycle for assistant electrical engineer.—That the matter be held over until the next meeting of the committee.
Water mains in various parts of the borough—That in future the council lay no more 3m. mains, and that the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for 4 in, where under the the previous decision 3in was specified, and that material for Torrington Avenue and Avon Road be included in the list.
Supply of electricity, F. Best. —That he be advised that the council regrets ft can only supply current for power during 'the peak hours at lighting rate, and that during the daylight ordinary power charges must be made, but that between 12.30 p.m. and 5 a.m. a special rate will be made ir It is of service to him during these hours. Electric Current, Killarney Road. — That the engineer advise Messrs Green and Smith that the matter will be considered iLs soon as the street lights have been installed in the various parts of the town (about the end of April). Telegraph engineer, joint line, Rifle Range Road. —That the council agreed to pay half the cost of maintenance of the line. Poles for services.—That the engineer be authorised to obtain 25 23ft poles at 27s 6d each for services from Bycroft and Co., Cambridge. Chlorinating plant and filter pipes.— That the engineer be authorised to visit Taumarnnui to make enquiries and inspect the chlorinating plant there and to visit Wanganui to inspect the Spiral Pipe Co.'s methods. H. Carr, gas service, River Road. — That the matter be held over for further enquiries. » H. Coriieson and B. Hobson. electric light, Hillsboro' Terrace. —That the engineer be authorised to put two poles across Mr Innes' property and one on Hillsboro' Terrace for a street light, and that the supply be given as soon as the street lighting already arranged for is completedElectricity branch, Public Works Department: heating of offices. —That the council supply the department as requested. Street light opposite the Hamilton East Post Office.—That the matter of fixing the place for a street light be left in the hands of Crs. Tristram, Brind and the electrical engineer to arrange. Gas Works engineer, ammoniacal liquor.—That the engineer give the enquirers an" assurance that for four months the council will not treat with anyone else. The recommendations were approved. Legal and Finance. The following recommendations of the legal and finance committee were advised: — Occupancy of Hamilton East Cemetery lands. —That the matter of Grigsby's occupancy of the land be referred to the borough solicitor with a view to finding out if the council cannot grant a lease covering a period of years. Rates to ,he written off.—That the rates outstanding and shown on the list laid on the table amounting to £lsl 7s lid be written off as at March 31. Sale of gas street lighting poles.— That the "City Trading Company be offered 130 poles at £3 each f.o.r. Hamilton, delivery of say 50 within three weeks, and that they be asked to make an offer after inspection for any smaller number. Electricity extension for modern bouses (Torrington Avenue). —That the engineer be given authority to instal the service.
