THE RIVER SERVICE.

ROOSE SHIPPING COMPANY. It will be gratifying to all who arc interested in the Waikato River service to learn that Mr Roose is able to report considerable progress and satisfactory trade during the quarter ended 31st January. The company's total trade earnings, chiefly consisting of boat, freights and sales of coal and timber, was £9202. During that period two of the largest boats purchased from the Waikato Shipping Co. were given a thorough overhaul, and in the case of the Freetrader the work covered a period of nearly six weeks. Despite these handicaps at the outset, the company has put through this large amount of business on a basis which is gratifying both to its customers and its shareholders. That the results mentioned above have been achieved we think speaks for itself, and augurs well for the future. An indefatigable worker and an efficient organiser, Mr Roose has gathered round him during the past 15 years a team of men whom any employer must feel proud of, and under the guidance of such a man —himself the largest shareholder in the company—those concerned in the development of the river are justified in looking for increased progress. Properly handled, there is nothing this district possesses that is so well calculated to lower living costs as the prompt use of the Waikato River. Mr Roose and his company are deserving of every success.
