Sir Joseph Ward' left Auckland for Wellington by the Main Trunk express, last evening.
A London message states that Mr PaTy, Engineer-in-Chief of the Comply responsible for the Arthur's Bass section of the New Zealand Midland railway, will sail on the Tainui on March 8 to attend the official open, ing.
Sergeant Ernest Manley, who has been in the police force for the last ffc»rteen years, and has been stationed at Palmerston North for 12 months, has tendered his resignation to the department, and wijl leave shortly tP go into business on his own account "at Marton.
Mr J. S. Winton, coaching foreman at the Palmerston North*railway, intends retiring on superannuation. Mr Winton has been on the staff of the railway for 30 years, and will cease his duties on April 11. Mr W. JRobertson, at presnt goods foreman, will succeed him. Mr M. Shinkwin, goods foreman at Wellington, will in turn replace Mr Robertson.
