CRICKET IN ENGLAND.
REPLY TO CRITICISM. (Australian and N . 7.. Cable Assn.) LONDON, January 24. At the annual meeting of the Hampshire County Club Mr Russel Bancroft, a member of the committee of the M.C.C., said that Mr Sydney Smith had written a hook in which lie lierceiy criticised English cricket, contending that it was out of date. His answer to Mr Smith was that cricket had a great tradition, and cricketers throughout the empire could safely trust Marylcbone, who had safeguarded the game for 150 years. Mr Smith apparently considered it would be better if a more slapdash stly e were introduced on ttie lines of “Do it and damn the consequences.” ile seemed to think that when the Australians came to England all other cricket should he scrapped. English cricketers had no sympathy with such ideas.
