NEW ZEALAND CRITICISED. BY EMPIRE EXBIIIITION MISSION. SIR J. ALLEN'S COMMENTS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 27, 12.30 p.m. LONDON, January 26. Very strong exception is taken by Sir James Allen to the report of the British Empire Exhibition Mission, which last year toured the Dominions, as far as it relates to New Zealand. In an interview Sir James declared that the report not only exceeds its scope, but casts grave anti un “ warranted reflections on the resources of New Zealand. He added: “I have sent a copy to Hon. W. F. Massey, and I am afraid it will have an unfortunate effect on New Zealand’s attitude towards the exhibition. I understood tile report was to be confidential, vet extracts have been published in the London press. These include a statement by the agricultural adviser to tti c mission that the best land in New Zealand is wortli only £3O to £4O per acre. This statement is quite incorrect, and was made apparently after a fortnight’s stay in the Dominion. The report further alleges that the facilities for grading stock exist only on paper, which is untrue; -also that dairy production in New Zealand is far too low, figures being quoted in support of the cry, which is false. The report criticises the management of the New Zealand railways, which is stated to be inferior to that of ten years ago. The hotels were severely criticised, it being said that there is a wide gap between them and Ihc average Canadian hotel. The delations bclween capital and labour are lengthily described, and serious reflections are cast on New Zealand employers. The report quotes a well-known extremist’s utterances regarding the war as an authority.
Sir .lames Allen added: “I dispute the accuracy of much of the report, but apart from its merits what have criticisms of New Zealand railways, lintels, methods of agriculture, and labour conditions to (to with the Empire Exhibition ?” The, Empire Exhibition sub-com-mittee appointed for the purpose, of insuring Ihal all materials and supplies be (lie produce of the Empire held a meeting to-day when Sic Joseph Cook was elected chairman.
