SEQUEL TO DESERTION

SEAMEN FROM FINLAND.

"IN LOVE WITH NEW ZEALAND."

A sequel to the desertion from the liner Pampa some two years ago of six of the crew was the appearance before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, of two youthful seamen, Ragnar Sodcrland and Vaino Paakro, both of whom claimed Finland as their place of birth, to answer charges of entering New Zealand without a permit under the Immigration Restriction Act, and failing to apply for registration within the period prescribed. Mr A. W. Blair, who represented the shipping company, said the company did not desire the men . to be punished for their action. "For each man," he added, "the company hal to enter into a bond of £IOO, but I think these two men passed the education test, fell in love with New Zealand, and have been working here ever since. I would ask for a remand for a week in order to make certain inquiries."

Sub-Inspector Cummings stated that accused had visited the police station one evening to register, and had bsen arrested on warrant upon the present charge. Accused were remanded for a week, and were ordered to report at the police station at 9 a.m. daily.
