ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE.

STIRRING CONTEST WITNESSED

The Hamilton High School’s annual steeplechase was held over the usual Luke course yesterday The course proceeds down Hinemoa Street, thonce up Collingwood Street, in the Lake gates near the Tower, round the Lake to the Ohaupo Road gate, then along Lake Road past the waterhouse, and down Marama Street to the school

gate, a distance of about 2£ miles. Tire race, which was run under the sealed handicap system, attracted an entry of 175 boys. Immediaiely after the start Hall, Bryant, Stewart and Veole assumed the lead, and making the pace very warm, showed the way to the Ohaupo Road gates, where Hall went to the front. Clearing the hill in great style, he carried the field along for the remainder of the journey, und never being headed, ran home a convincing winner in the good, time of 13 minutes 32 seconds. E. Johnston, who passed several boys in the run home, was second, his time being 13.37. A stirring struggle was witnessed for third place between Brett and Bryant, who had run neck to neck for the greater part of the race, the two breasting the tapes simultaneously. Their time was 14.16. The next best time was Handley’s, 14.19. When the sealed handicaps were opened it was found that the race had resulted as follows: —McDell (290 sec,), nett time llmin. 4sec., 1; Blomfield' (350 sec.), nett time 12min., 2; Hodder (130 sec.), nett time 12min. 26sec„ 3; Griffiths (200 sec.), nett time 12min. 32sec., 4. The record for the race is held by Prosser, who in 1920 ran the distance in 13 minutes 10 seconds. Hall, who this year established tne fastest time, also ran the fastest time last year, and won the sealed handicap in 1920. j In connection with the School athletic cups, points were obtained yesterday as follows: —Seniors: Hall 5 points, Johnston 3, Thompson 1. Juniors: Brough 5 points, N. Stewart 3, Ellicott 1.

The annual school sports will be held as usual, early in November, on Seddon Park.
