REMARKABLE RESULTS
REJUVENATING THE AGED.
FRENCH SURGEON’S CLAIMS. (United Service.) Received October 7, 10.10 a.m. LONDON, Oclober 6. : The Daily Mail’s Paris correspon-j dent slates that an extraordinary scene was witnessed at the French Congress og Surgery. Dr Voronoff, the director of the Laboratory' Expert mental Surgery College de France,, and the originator of Ihe-idea of monkey 1 gland grafting to rejuvenate old men, was thrown out of the Congress and prevented from stating his ideas. The expulsion was apparently due to a newspaper interview with Dr Voronoffj The scene was one of great confusion; Dr Voronoff and Professor Hartmann, 1 the well known surgeon, engaged in an excited argument, shouting and wav-] ing their hands. They were surround-; ed by dozens of famous surgeons, gesticulating, and finally Dr Voronoff was hustled out of do'ors.
Later the doctor was interviewed bjf the Daily Mail, and he recounted the communication which he desired ta make to Congress. He stated that ha had practiced the graftinglef interstital glands of large apes on seven different male patients. ]
The first experiment was made ini 1920, but the first two were unsuccess*! ful. The third graft wqs carried out on a man of 59, who complained of ill health and loss of memory. The graft; took well and the patient recovered his full intellectual powers and his health! greatly improved. The fourth experiment was on. a mart who was showing every sign of seniledecay and was unable to express .his thoughts. After the grafting of the] glands of a large eynocephal monkey; he improved in a most marked manner. His virility returned, his body became 1 yell set up, his eyes recovered their brightness, and lie resumed iiis former] life. vrrcq Another patient, an Englishman nanon ed Arthur Evelyn Liardelt, was the best 1 proof of the efficacy of the operation,- 1 and he had travelled to Paris to testify,] He was aged 76 and was operated on in' 1921. Eight months after the opera-: tion Dr Voronoff said he was stopiiled to see the change. The patient had : lost half of his embonpoint,- his aspect became cheerful, his movements active, and his eyes clear. He had certainly! recovered 30 years of his lost youth.] Upon being re-examined 20 months after the operation the doctor found the change fully maintained.
