THE BIG MILK CAN
A GOOD IDEA FOR RAILWAYS. A new way of conveying milk by train is being adopted in America. Steel tank cars, lined throughout with glass, are being used to handle milk traffic from a centre in the midst of a dairy country into Pittsburg. The milk brought into this centre on the various local trains is emptied into a stationary refrigerated tank as it arrives, and, after being tested, is chilled to about 40 degrees, it is then emptied into the special tank cars, the glass interiors of which are insulated on much the same principle as a Thermos flask, and the cars start off on the journey to Pittsburg, a distance of over 100 miles.
The cars are equipped with an apparatus inside to stir the milk on arrival at Pittsburg, so that the cream and milk will be well mixed when poured into the tanks of the motortrucks meeting the train. The glass lining permits of perfect sterilisation by means of a soda solution and hot water. It is certainly a great advance in scientific milk distribution.
