PUTARURU

Development Matters. "The Putaruru District Development Board met last week. 'lt was decided to thank the Postmaster-General- for his "special investigation at the B'oard s request, resulting in the decision to instal electric light in the jP&st Office at Putaruru; also to thank Mr F. F. Hockly, M.P., for his valued support to the Board's various requests to the Government during the present session, and inquire if he had yet had an ■opportunity to discuss with the Hon. J, G. Coates, as Minister for Public Works, the suggestion that 100 men should be employed at once at Arapuni in preliminary work. A complaint by a member that he had been refused a long-distance telephone connection by the Putaruru exchange on the ground that the wires were too busy, led to some discussion on such matters in general. It was agreed that as the ' Putaruru telephone subscribers now numbered 93, the matter should be deferred until the number reached 100, entitling the subscribers to a 7 a.m. to 11 p-m. service, giving three hours—B p.m. to 11 p.m.—which might prove slack enough, for the acceptance of. long-distance calls. The T.T.T. Line.

The residents of the district, and especially those of Lichfield and Tokoro'a, on the Taupo Totara Timber Company's Railway, are anxiously awaiting the result of an important conference in Wellington, as to the future of the railway, at which representatives of all the parties concerned arc present. Rumour was current last week that the prospects of a satsfactory settlement were bright, and as this subject is one of vital importance to the settlers, and bush owners along this line, and to the town of Putaruru, a definite announcement willvbe very welcome. Meanwhile, the settlers are pleased to note that the Company has reduced its rates cf freight on manures by 50 per centl Good Concerts.

Putaruru is at present being favoured with an era 'of good concerts. Following the Glee Club's success some little time ago, the local Methodist Ladies' Guild on Wednesday evening of last week entertained another public audience in the Town Hall to a musical treat in the form of a concert. The 'items were all much enjoyed, and manv encores demanded. As intend r ed, the Rev. A. Mitchell, of Thames, was the leading artist, his splendid rendering of well-known songs captivating his audience, who would not be satisfied with anything less 'than seven items from him. The other artists included the Putaruru Orchestra, members of the Glee Club, Mrs F. M. Proctor, Mrs F. E. Kersey, Mrs S\, G. Barnett, Mrs Millington, Mrs A. Brown, Miss T. Vosper, Miss Ibbotson, Miss T. Schaly, and Miss G. Ashford. The funds of the Guild will benefit by several pounds In the form of proceeds from the concert. Farmers Interested.

The movement to form a Herdtesting. Association for the Putaruru district has ' unfortunately been delayed owing to poor attendance at the September meeting of the local branch, of the Farmers' Union, held in the Town Hall on Saturday aftcruoon last. The matter was to have been dealt with at 'the meeting, but ihosc present postponed it until the next monthly meeting in the hope that there would be a larger attendance then, the obvious approach of rain after a prolonged dry spell, and the general rush of work with Hie heginning of Hie dairying season, making it impracticable for most of the members to be present on Saturday. The meeting dealt with a ietler from a settler complaining of non-enforce-ment of rabbit inspectors' notices. It was decided to reply expressing the hope that the' Rabbit Boards now being formed for the district would result in a speedy and thorough extermination of the pest. WAITETUNA-RAGLAN. Town Board Election. it, is rumoured that some wellknown Hamilton men are seeking nomination for the forthcoming election of the llaglan Town Board. Social Evening. The biggest crowd that ever assembled in Ihe Memorial Hall, Te Uku, gathered on the 30th August to take part in a social evening organised by Rev. G. B. W. Seton, vicar of Raglan, Which consisted iof old-fashioned games, dancing and community singing. Vocal items were also given by Messrs Adams, Cheoklcy, and Wiers, and Miss L. Cogswell. After a dainty supper dancing was kept up till the early hours, when all joined hands ale.! sang. "Auld Lang- Syne," followed by three cheers for Mr Seton. The dance music was supplied by Miss 1,. Gogswell. Mrs llarsanl, and Mr Bruford (piano), and Messrs Coate and T. Paikau (accordeon). Mr Norris made an efficient M.C. The proceedings terminated with Ihe singing of Ihe National Anlliem. NGAKINEPOURI-TUHIKARAMEA. Hockey. On Saturday last a ladies' hockey team, Ihe "Soils," journeyed from Hamilton, ami played a friendly game witii ihf> Ngahinepouri ladies on the local ground. The teams were vct,y

evenly matched, and a fast, exciting game was the result, although the ground, which was rather bumpy, spoilt a number of chances. As this was tlie local girls' first match, and as nearly all the team were beginners they did very well indeed, and had hard luck in not scoring a few more goals. At the call of time Scoits were in the lead, having scored two goals to one. Mr Staples refcreed the game. Working Bees.

The Sports' Committee has held two working bees during the last fortnight and a good number turned up to help with the work. The ground is now fenced, and various shrubs and hedges have been planted and fenced off. The ground has still to have a good deal done to it in the way of levelling, but when it is finished we should have a very pretty and ideal spot for a sports, ground. Dance. On Friday, September 15, our fortnightly dance will be held in the Ngahinepouri Hall, and should prove as successful as the last one.
