NEW BILL INTRODUCED. ERADICATION OF~ HAWTHORN. SOME DRASTIC PROPOSALS. By Telegraph —Special to Times. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A bill relating to fireblight has been introduced in the House. It provides that the Government may declare any specified portion of New Zealand to be a "commercial fruit-growing district." Then regulations may be made- for the trimming or cutting of all hawthorn growing within that district, or any part of that district. The Government may order the complete destruction of hawthorn in a district if fireblight is present, and the inspector may do the work at the expense of the occupier of the land if the order is disregarded. The penalty for an offence against the Act is a fine not exceeding £5 for the first offence and not exceeding £SO for each subsequent offence. The provision of the Noxious Weeds Amendment Act of last year regarding hawthorn is to be repealed, and all ,orders declaring hawthorn to be a noxious weed are to be deemed'to be revoked.
